Kohima, July 29: The Indian Air Force has initiated a large-scale rescue operation in Nagaland due to heavy rainfall and landslides affecting the region. On Tuesday, the Air Force, in coordination with the state government, successfully evacuated over 100 stranded citizens and delivered essential relief supplies to remote areas.
According to officials, the Air Force’s mission primarily focuses on rescuing individuals isolated by landslides and continuous rainfall that disrupted road connectivity. Additionally, the Air Force is providing aerial support to civil administration, reaching areas where road access has been completely blocked.
Officials from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority reported that several districts have experienced landslides due to the heavy monsoon rains, severely impacting the road network.
Notably, the road connections in the Mon and Longleng districts have been cut off. Following this, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority requested assistance from the Indian Air Force, which launched aerial operations to rescue stranded travelers and deliver relief materials. The state government’s helicopter has also been deployed for relief efforts.
During the rescue operation, candidates traveling to participate in the Nagaland Public Service Commission’s Combined Education Services Examination were also safely evacuated, as their travel plans were disrupted due to blocked roads.
The relief supplies delivered by the Air Force include food items, medical kits, clothing, and other essential goods. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority stated that aerial rescue and relief operations will continue as needed, considering the weather and ground conditions.
Moreover, relief distribution efforts have been intensified in other affected districts. Trucks loaded with relief materials have been dispatched from Mokokchung to Tuli, while rations have been distributed among stranded and displaced families in the Changtongya area.
District disaster management authorities have also begun providing financial assistance to affected families under the emergency relief fund. Families in Wokha district whose homes and protective walls were damaged by landslides due to continuous rain have received financial aid. In Shamator district, Deputy Commissioner Arikumba has provided immediate relief funds to two families affected by the rains. Additionally, five families impacted by landslides in Junheboto district have also received ERF assistance.
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority has confirmed that necessary funds for road restoration, debris removal, and emergency relief operations have already been released to all districts.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio shared updates on social media platform X, stating that Home Guards, Civil Defense, and SDRF personnel are collaborating with other disaster relief agencies and departments in rescue and relief operations.
He emphasized that all agencies are working in coordination to deliver relief to affected areas and restore normalcy.
The state government, Indian Air Force, SDRF, and district administration teams are currently on high alert. Rescue, relief distribution, and road restoration efforts continue in the monsoon-affected regions.
