Natural Farming: The Future of Himachal Pradeshs Economy, Says Chief Minister Sukhu

Shimla, April 27: Chief Minister Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh inaugurated development projects worth ₹34.31 crores virtually on Sunday at Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Solan district. He emphasized that natural farming is the future.

During the event, he also opened a hostel for 107 students at the Horticulture and Forestry College in Neri, Hamirpur, built at a cost of ₹3.63 crores. Additionally, he inaugurated the administrative building of the Agricultural Science Center in Tabo, Lahaul-Spiti district, which cost ₹1.48 crores.

The Chief Minister laid the foundation for hostels accommodating 50 working women each at the Horticulture and Forestry Colleges in Neri and Khaggal, with construction costs of ₹8.57 crores and ₹8.68 crores, respectively. He also laid the foundation for a hostel at the main campus of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University, which will house 100 working women, with a budget of ₹11.95 crores.

Sukhu stated that natural farming is the future of Himachal Pradesh, and the government is actively promoting it. The university plays a crucial role in encouraging farmers to adopt natural farming methods. Despite the central government’s discontinuation of the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG), the state government is committed to strengthening education, healthcare, and the rural economy, ensuring adequate funding for these sectors.

He mentioned that over 200,000 farmers have registered for natural farming, with approximately 198,000 receiving certificates. Agriculture remains the backbone of the state’s economy, with nearly 90% of the population residing in rural areas and about 53.95% directly dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. Keeping this in mind, the government is dedicated to implementing progressive policies and farmer-friendly initiatives to bolster the rural economy.

To ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce, the state government is providing the highest Minimum Support Price (MSP) in the country for naturally grown crops.
