Coal India Supplies 322.90 Million Tons of Coal in First Five Months of FY26

New Delhi, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced that it supplied 322.90 million tons (MT) of coal during the first five months of fiscal year 2026, from April to August. This marks a 6.7% increase compared to the 302.60 MT supplied in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Coal.

In August alone, CIL delivered 60.60 MT of coal, up by 5.5% from August of the previous year. The supply to the power sector in August 2026 rose to 48.46 MT, reflecting a 4.5% increase from August 2025. Currently, CIL has a stockpile of 76 MT of coal in its mines, along with an additional 46 MT ready for mining. In the first three days of September, the average daily supply to the power sector was approximately 1.35 MT, which increased to 1.5 MT on September 4.

The Ministry noted that reduced rainfall has led to improved coal production and supply. The prolonged exposure to rain had caused coal layers to become sticky and wet, but they are now drying out, facilitating easier flow of freshly mined coal. This has simplified operations and distribution through coal handling plants (CHPs). Additionally, efforts are underway to pump out water from lower coal layers, restoring production, while repairs to internal transport roads are progressing rapidly.

With the onset of dry weather, geotechnical concerns regarding the stability of dumps and benches, as well as safety risks that increased during rainy periods, have significantly diminished. This allows the workforce to operate without interruptions. To ensure a smooth coal flow, CIL’s subsidiaries are utilizing this low-demand period to enhance their CHP-silo systems. As dry weather approaches, efforts are also being made to clear rail tracks at loading points and yards. Companies like NCL and SECL are also expanding their crushing capacities, which will prove beneficial in the near future.
