Rajgir, March 30: Nalanda University is set to hold its second convocation ceremony on March 31 at its permanent campus in Rajgir. President and Visitor of Nalanda University, Droupadi Murmu, will be the chief guest at this event.
In a departure from traditional convocation attire, the university has designed special academic robes that emphasize Indian culture and sustainability. The administration has opted for khadi garments for students, moving away from the colonial gown tradition. Distinguished guests will wear garments made from Bhagalpur’s Ahimsa silk, known for its eco-friendly and cruelty-free properties. This fabric allows silk worms to emerge from their cocoons naturally, making it lightweight and comfortable for the local climate.
The university administration states that these robes harmonize with Indian traditions and environmental values. The design, color scheme, and artistry of the attire are inspired by the essence of “The Nalanda Way,” which symbolizes the coexistence of humanity and nature. The university’s emblem, a tree formed by human figures, embodies this philosophy, representing sustainable development, knowledge sharing, and unity in diversity.
The ceremonial garments for guests have been specially sourced from weavers in Bihar’s Napura and Baswan Bigaha. Additionally, traditional weaving arts like ‘Bawan Booti’ have been highlighted in this initiative, showcasing Bihar’s rich cultural heritage. This will mark President Droupadi Murmu’s first visit to Rajgir and Nalanda University in her capacity as President. During the ceremony, she will deliver a convocation address, confer degrees, and award gold medals to outstanding students. She will also inaugurate the newly constructed 2000-seat auditorium, “Vishwamitraalay.”
