Tuensang, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Authorities in Nagaland have issued a statewide warning following the tragic deaths of ten individuals in Tuensang from suspected contaminated alcohol. The state’s Excise and Prohibition Department emphasized the dangers of consuming alcohol from unknown or dubious sources.
According to Tuensang police, between September 10 and 12, nine of the deceased had direct or indirect ties to alcohol consumption. However, the exact causes of death remain undetermined. Nagaland’s Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, confirmed that the victims’ fatalities are linked to the consumption of tainted liquor.
In a separate incident, one individual reportedly committed suicide, prompting an ongoing investigation. Local media sources suggest that the actual number of fatalities may be higher, with some deaths possibly unreported.
An official statement revealed that on September 12, the Tuensang police received reports regarding a series of deaths among individuals admitted to Tuensang Civil Hospital. Initial inquiries indicated that most victims experienced symptoms such as blurred vision, severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting prior to their deaths.
While the consumption of contaminated alcohol is suspected to be the cause, scientific confirmation is still pending. The statement further noted that forensic procedures will be employed in the investigation.
Most victims did not undergo autopsies, as their bodies were cremated before police could gather detailed information about the deaths. Tuensang police are conducting an in-depth investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fatalities, identify the source and nature of the alcohol consumed, and determine if any individuals are responsible for the incident.
Authorities also discovered that three of the deceased were members of the same family, who allegedly purchased the alcohol from a local source.
