Myanmar Assures India: No Use of Its Territory Against Security Interests

New Delhi, June 1: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing on Monday in New Delhi, addressing the activities of Indian insurgent groups operating in the Southeast Asian nation. President Hlaing assured that Myanmar would not allow its territory to be used against India’s security interests.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri commented on the dialogue, stating that the President reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to addressing these concerns. He assured New Delhi that necessary measures would be taken to prevent groups posing a threat to India’s security.

Misri stated, “The activities of Indian insurgent groups near our borders in Myanmar are a critical issue. This was raised again by the Prime Minister, and the President reiterated his assurance that Myanmar is sensitive to these concerns and will take all necessary actions to ensure they do not pose a threat to India’s security.”

Addressing questions about Myanmar’s internal stability, Misri emphasized the ongoing conflict between the military and ethnic armed groups. He highlighted the efforts by Myanmar’s officials to promote dialogue among various stakeholders to foster broader national consensus.

He added, “Another aspect of internal security is the Myanmar government’s attempt to bring all ethnic armed organizations and groups onto a single platform to advance the peace process. This is essentially about assessing the current governance structure in Myanmar and identifying necessary changes to create a foundation for widespread national consensus.”

Emphasizing the regional significance of peace and stability in Myanmar, Misri noted that developments in the country impact not only India’s security and connectivity interests but also the unity of ASEAN, of which Myanmar is a crucial member.

“This is an issue of clear interest to us. As I mentioned, stability and peace in Myanmar are vital for India. It is essential not only for the security of our northeastern region and the people living along the 1,643-kilometer border with Myanmar but also for our connectivity interests with Southeast Asia.”

He concluded, “Security and stability in Myanmar are also important for ASEAN’s unity, as Myanmar is a large and significant country within the ASEAN framework.”
