Music is an Integral Part of My Life, Never Imitated; Hariharan on His Journey and AR Rahman

Mumbai, March 1: Renowned singer Hariharan has elevated ghazal, playback music, and fusion to new heights with his melodious and soulful voice. In a special interview with the news agency, he reflected on his 50-year musical journey, his deep connection with legendary composer A.R. Rahman, and his experiences singing in over ten languages.

Hariharan emphasized that music is not merely a profession for him; it is an art of living. He shared insights about his childhood and family, stating, “I was born into a family where the fragrance of raag was always present. From a young age, music was not a career for me, but a natural part of life. My entry into the film industry was challenging because I remained steadfast in my original voice and style. I never imitated anyone and maintained my unique sound.”

Discussing his experiences working with A.R. Rahman, he said, “Collaborating with Rahman feels like two friends sharing a vision while sitting on the same ladder. He provides a stepping stone for singers. When working with him, you must absorb his new ideas like a sponge and infuse them with your own essence. This experience has always been inspiring.”

On the current state of ghazal, Hariharan remarked, “Ghazal is special and touches the soul. In today’s instant age, where people want everything immediately, it is crucial to make ghazal contemporary to reach the new generation. This theme inspired my new album ‘Jaan Meri,’ which blends traditional ghazal with modern bossa nova rhythms, aptly named ‘Ghazal-Nova.’”

He also discussed the future of fusion music, stating, “The era of ‘Colonial Cousins’ was not just about music; it was an energy that broke boundaries. Leslie (Lewis) and I still stay in touch and continue to discuss music. The future of fusion lies in maintaining imagination and sincerity.”

Having sung in over ten languages, Hariharan shared his unique experiences, saying, “Each language has its own energy. I try to absorb every language like a sponge. The way to capture emotion is to understand the thoughts hidden behind the words. This 50-year journey feels like a time capsule of memories. The most beautiful part is that I never carry the burden of success. Even today, I work in the studio with the same childlike curiosity I felt on my first day.”
