Mumbai, April 26: Renowned Indian playback singer, qawwali artist, and musician Mujtaba Aziz Nazaa recently discussed the evolving landscape of music, the growing influence of technology, and his Sufi heritage in an interview with a news agency.
He emphasized that music is not merely a play of notes but a spiritual pursuit that AI can never replicate. Nazaa expressed concerns about the increasing interference of AI in music, stating that while technology can be helpful, it cannot touch the ‘soul’ of music. “Music is an incredibly emotional and spiritual experience. AI operates only within the boundaries it has been taught,” he noted.
He further asserted that genres like Sufi and qawwali emerge directly from the heart and are based on spiritual inspirations. Such emotions can never be felt or created by a machine.
Mujtaba Aziz Nazaa is set to release his upcoming project ‘Doomedika Sultan,’ which he described as a deep reflection of his Sufi roots. “This song was prepared a long time ago but wasn’t released for various reasons. Now, I am going to release it independently,” he shared.
Discussing the difference between film songs and independent music, Nazaa remarked, “When working in films, an artist must consider the perspectives of directors, producers, and composers. This often limits an artist’s expression. In contrast, independent music offers complete creative freedom. In today’s social media era, artists have direct access to their audiences, which is a boon for independent music.”
He also shared an interesting observation about live events and qawwali experiences. “Even though I prepare a setlist before going on stage, the real magic happens with the audience’s energy. As soon as we receive feedback from the crowd, we adapt on the spot. The flow of songs changes according to the audience’s mood. This spontaneity makes qawwali distinct from other genres.”
In today’s commercial age, Mujtaba Aziz Nazaa described music as a ‘spiritual pursuit.’ He lamented that music is increasingly viewed merely as a means of livelihood or profession, which diminishes its inherent devotion. The patience and dedication required for music are becoming rare in today’s youth.
