Mumbai to Get New Woman Mayor on February 11

Mumbai is set to elect a new mayor on February 11, with the position reserved for a woman from the general category. The mayoral voting will take place at 12 noon in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

It remains uncertain whether the mayor will be from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the Shiv Sena. Both parties, which together hold a majority, are expected to support their candidate for the post.

Nomination filing for the mayoral election will be held on February 7, the same day when the deputy mayor election process will be completed. The election will be overseen by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. Officials have indicated that the names of committee members may also be announced at the next meeting.

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections were held on January 15, with vote counting completed on January 16. BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 89 seats, while its ally, Shiv Sena, secured 29 seats. The Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav Thackeray won 65 seats, and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) won 6 seats.

The majority mark stands at 114 seats, which BJP and Shiv Sena have crossed together. This coalition can jointly decide the new mayor. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether the mayoral chair will go to BJP or the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction).

The residents of Mumbai are keenly awaiting February 11, when the city’s leadership will be handed over to a woman corporator who will take charge as the new mayor.
