New Delhi, July 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday, urging him to heed medical advice and focus on his health after ending a 26-day hunger strike.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “I request Sonam Ji to follow doctors’ advice in his daily life and regain his health as soon as possible. I pray for his good health.”
This message from the Prime Minister came just hours after Wangchuk broke his fast in the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, along with senior leaders from the Leh-Ladakh apex body, doctors, and family members at a private hospital.
Additionally, PM Modi announced that the central government has prepared a comprehensive draft bill aimed at implementing strict provisions and severe penalties for paper leak cases.
This proposal is set to be discussed in a cabinet meeting on Friday, with expectations of it being presented and passed in the ongoing parliamentary session next week.
Earlier, in a post on Thursday, PM Modi emphasized, “The welfare and future of the youth of the country is our top priority. To ensure swift punishment for those guilty of paper leaks, fast-track courts will be established for quick resolution of cases. Directives have been issued to ensure necessary actions by the relevant departments. This is a crucial step in safeguarding the interests of students. Anyone who jeopardizes the future of our youth will not be spared.”
Wangchuk’s hunger strike garnered nationwide attention, prompting appeals from leaders of various political parties and civil society groups for him to end his fast. He reported that 65 members of Parliament either met him or wrote to him expressing concern about potential unrest.
