Mumbai, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Abu Azmi, the president of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party and a sitting MLA, has met with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide regarding the proposed demolition of slum dwellings exceeding 14 feet in height. Azmi is calling for a halt to the planned actions by the municipal body.
Following his meeting, Azmi stated that discussions with officials revealed that it would not be feasible to demolish such a large number of structures in a single day. Reports indicate that around 39,000 slum dwellings are set to be affected, but Azmi emphasized that any actions against illegal constructions must be approached with care. He advocated for finding a viable solution before proceeding with demolitions.
In light of recent events, including the death of a student at IIT Bombay, Azmi expressed concern over the family’s hunger strike. He highlighted the gravity of losing a child sent for education, suggesting that if the student faced discrimination due to his Dalit background, those responsible should be held accountable.
On the mosque controversy in Ujjain, Azmi asserted that places of worship that existed before 1947 should remain undisturbed. He argued that if road expansions are necessary, alternate routes should be considered rather than demolishing mosques. Azmi accused the government of deliberately targeting Muslims and using such issues for political polarization.
Regarding the Santacruz sewer tragedy, Azmi criticized the government for neglecting public safety concerns in favor of religious issues. He lamented the loss of life in the incident and called for a government that prioritizes the safety and well-being of its citizens over divisive political agendas.
Azmi concluded by demanding the resignation of the current government, asserting that it has failed to address the pressing problems faced by the populace.
