New Delhi, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : The Supreme Court Collegium has put forth recommendations for the appointment of three judges to the apex court. Led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, the five-member Collegium has sent the names of three Chief Justices from different High Courts to the central government.
The recommended candidates include Justice Sunita Agarwal from the Gujarat High Court, Justice D.K. Upadhyay from the Delhi High Court, and Justice A.P. Singh from the Telangana High Court. The next steps will be taken by the central government based on these recommendations.
Recently, the Collegium has also made significant recommendations regarding judicial appointments in High Courts. In a meeting held on September 23, CJI Chandrachud and the Collegium approved proposals to appoint 12 additional judges as permanent judges in the Guwahati, Uttarakhand, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh High Courts.
Justice Kaushik Goswami has been recommended for a permanent position in the Guwahati High Court, while Justice Subhash Upadhyay is proposed for a permanent judgeship in the Uttarakhand High Court. In the Kerala High Court, five additional judges are recommended for permanent appointments, including Justices P. Krishna Kumar, K.V. Jayakumar, Murali Krishna S., Jobin Sebastian, and P.V. Balakrishnan.
Similarly, five additional judges from the Andhra Pradesh High Court have been proposed for permanent positions, including Justices Maheshwar Rao Kuncham, Thoota Chandra Dhanasekar, Challa Gunaranjan, Avadhanam Hari Haranath Sharma, and Yadavalli Lakshman Rao.
According to Article 217(1) of the Constitution, the President appoints the Chief Justices and other judges of the High Courts, while additional judges are appointed under Article 224(1).
