Mumbai, March 6: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has made significant revelations regarding an online network linked to terrorist activities in Maharashtra. Following a raid in Mumbai, the ATS arrested engineering student Ayaan Sheikh, who is accused of having ties to the Pakistani terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Islamic State (ISIS).
According to the ATS’s preliminary investigation, Ayaan Sheikh has been operating as a sleeper agent for Jaish-e-Mohammed in Mumbai for the past six months. The agency claims that he was tasked with radicalizing youth and recruiting new members for the organization. As part of this mission, he was reportedly brainwashing two fellow students and several close friends to work for the terrorist group.
The investigation revealed that Ayaan had influenced his two friends to the extent that they began planning to leave the country and engage in terrorist activities. The ATS has recorded statements from both students. However, the agency noted that it has not yet established whether they were actively involved in any terrorist activities.
The ATS also discovered that Ayaan was receiving funding from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to operate this network. The funds were reportedly being transferred via cryptocurrency. The agency is currently investigating his bank accounts and money trails to determine the total amount received and the individuals involved.
During the investigation, several crucial pieces of evidence were recovered from Ayaan’s mobile phone. The ATS found numerous audio and video files related to Jaish-e-Mohammed’s leader, Azhar Masood, and other terrorist propaganda materials. Additionally, he was active on Telegram channels and other encrypted messaging platforms where radical content was shared.
The agency uncovered several chat records indicating attempts to promote terrorist recruitment. Ayaan was trying to connect with youth on these platforms and include them in groups that disseminated terrorist propaganda.
According to the ATS, these encrypted groups included several foreign nationals and suspected facilitators, believed to be part of the sleeper networks and recruitment cells of terrorist organizations. The investigation also revealed that many youths from different states in India were members of these groups.
The ATS has shared information related to this case with other security agencies. The agency stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further significant revelations may emerge in the coming days.
