Monsoon Set to Arrive in Kerala on June 4, Maharashtra to Feel Its Impact Soon

Mumbai, June 2: Relief from the intense heat is on the horizon as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the monsoon will reach Kerala on June 4. Vikram Singh, the director of IMD, shared that the monsoon will gradually advance into several districts of Maharashtra.

In a conversation from Mumbai, Singh stated that the monsoon is expected to first arrive in Kerala on June 4, followed by a gradual movement towards Maharashtra. It may take about a week for the monsoon to reach some parts of Maharashtra, while it could take around ten days to arrive in Mumbai, assuming the monsoon’s pace remains normal.

Currently, continuous rainfall is being observed in the coastal areas of Kerala and Karnataka, while Maharashtra is experiencing only sporadic rain accompanied by thunder. However, an increase in these activities is anticipated in the next three to four days, particularly in the Konkan and Goa regions.

The weather department has issued an orange warning for several districts in the state. Areas such as Satara and Kolhapur in South and Central Maharashtra, as well as parts of Vidarbha including Amaravati, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Jalna, may experience moderate to severe thunderstorms.

Singh noted that storm activities often intensify before the monsoon becomes fully active. Wind speeds can reach 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, potentially causing trees and branches to break.

He advised the public to seek shelter during thunderstorms and to resume travel or other activities only after the weather normalizes. Typically, such weather phenomena can last from half an hour to an hour.

Regarding rainfall prospects, Singh indicated that there is a likelihood of thunder accompanied by rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas over the next 48 hours.

According to the weather department, rain and storm activities are expected to increase in the evening, particularly between 5 PM and 7 PM. This could provide some relief from the current heat and humidity.

For Thane, Navi Mumbai, and the Mumbai metropolitan area, Singh mentioned that noticeable changes in weather will begin on June 4. Various regions will experience thunder and light to moderate rainfall, leading to a decrease in temperature and humidity. However, full relief may take a few more days.

He added that after June 8 and 9, the extent of rain and thunderstorm activities is expected to increase further, providing broader relief from the heat and humidity.

Discussing the monsoon’s progress, Singh confirmed that after arriving in Kerala on June 4, it will gradually move forward and become active in different parts of Maharashtra, provided favorable conditions persist.

The weather department will continue to monitor the situation and issue necessary warnings as required.
