India’s long-awaited monsoon is finally gaining momentum, bringing much-needed relief from the intense summer heat. Over the next 48 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert across 15 states, as pre-monsoon showers and advancing monsoon clouds continue to drench large parts of the country.
The plains of western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand witnessed heavy overnight rains, leading to a significant dip in temperatures and waterlogging in several areas. While the full monsoon is yet to arrive in parts of North India, the ongoing pre-monsoon showers are offering a temporary reprieve from the soaring heat.
Meanwhile, North-East India is battling heavy rains and landslides, with major routes blocked in hilly regions. Parts of South India are also facing flood-like conditions due to persistent downpours.
Here is the latest IMD forecast for different regions:
Heavy Rain in Maharashtra
IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra:
Raigad, Pune, Satara: Red alert for intense showers with thunderstorms
Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Amravati, Bhandara, Nagpur: Orange alert for significant rainfall over the next two days
Monsoon Set to Enter Uttar Pradesh
The monsoon is expected to sweep across Uttar Pradesh within the next 24 hours. A heavy rain warning has been issued for several districts as the monsoon currents advance steadily across North India.
Jharkhand Faces Torrential Downpours
The Ranchi Meteorological Centre forecasts heavy rainfall statewide until June 20. A red alert has been issued for:
June 18: Purbi Singhbhum, Saraikela, Kharsawan, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Jamtara, Dumka
June 19: Koderma, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Ranchi
Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to accompany the rains in these areas.
Southern and Northeastern States on Alert
The IMD has also issued alerts for:
Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu: Heavy rains with thunderstorm activity
Telangana, Goa, Odisha: Widespread monsoon showers expected
Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Puducherry, Nagaland: Continued heavy rain and potential localised flooding
Monsoon to Strengthen Further
With the monsoon now progressing northwards, it is expected to become active soon in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and additional parts of North and Central India. Weather officials are closely monitoring the system as rainfall patterns intensify across various regions.
Travelers and residents are advised to stay updated with IMD bulletins and take precautions in areas facing heavy rain, possible flooding, or landslides.
