Mizoram Intensifies Anti-Drug Campaign with Coordinated Efforts

Aizawl, June 23: Mizoram’s Excise Minister Lalnithanga Hmar announced on Tuesday that the state government is actively working with various organizations to combat drug abuse and trafficking through continuous and coordinated efforts.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse in the state.

Speaking at a seminar on “Emerging Trends and New Challenges Facing Mizoram,” Minister Hmar emphasized the need for stronger and more coordinated actions. He noted that Mizoram’s relatively small size and population present an opportunity for effective collective action. He expressed confidence that if all sections of society work together, the state can make significant progress in tackling the drug problem and safeguarding future generations.

This seminar was organized in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, celebrated annually on June 26.

Sushil Singh, Director of the Social Welfare Department, highlighted that Mizoram’s geographical location, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, and its proximity to the notorious “Golden Triangle” make it particularly vulnerable to drug trafficking and substance abuse.

He stated that addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that includes prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, awareness, and community participation. He also called for better collaboration among government agencies, civil society organizations, churches, and citizens.

C. Lalruia, Secretary of the Excise and Narcotics Department, emphasized the need for Mizoram to develop new strategies that adapt to emerging trends in drug abuse by utilizing advanced knowledge, expertise, and innovative approaches.

The seminar featured presentations from experts on various aspects of drug abuse and rehabilitation. An interactive discussion and Q&A session at the end allowed participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore collaborative approaches to address the challenges posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
