
Reykjavik, March 24: The Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Sibi George, met with the Speaker of Iceland’s Parliament, Thórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir, on Tuesday. They discussed mutual interests and parliamentary exchanges.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared a statement on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Secretary (West) Sibi George met with the President of the Althingi, Thórunn Sveinbjarnardóttir, on Tuesday.”
He added, “Both parties discussed shared interests in bilateral, regional, and multilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of parliamentary exchanges.”
On Monday, India and Iceland held the fourth Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Reykjavik, reviewing bilateral cooperation. Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration in trade and investment, renewable energy (especially geothermal energy), fisheries, and people-to-people connections.
The meeting was co-chaired by Sibi George and Martin Eyjólfsson, the Permanent Secretary of Iceland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Randhir Jaiswal posted on ‘X’, “The fourth Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between India and Iceland took place today in Reykjavik. Secretary (West) Sibi George co-chaired this meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Martin Eyjólfsson.”
He further mentioned, “Both sides reviewed the entire scope of bilateral cooperation and agreed to strengthen it in areas such as trade and investment, renewable energy, fisheries, and people-to-people relations. They emphasized that the India-EFTA-TEPA has opened a new chapter in economic and commercial relations and agreed to further strengthen business ties. Both parties also exchanged views on regional and global issues.”
On March 22, Sibi George also met with Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir to discuss bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues.
After the meeting, Randhir Jaiswal posted on ‘X’, “Secretary (West) Sibi George met with Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir. They discussed bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues, along with the positive progress made in bilateral cooperation in recent years, particularly in geothermal energy, fisheries, and clean energy. Discussions also took place regarding the implementation of the India-EFTA TEPA.”
