Lucknow, August 26: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati has called for sensitivity from all parties involved in the growing controversies surrounding religious matters. She emphasized the importance of avoiding comments on sensitive issues related to any religion, religious texts, practices, and beliefs, stating that it is in the best interest of the country and its people. Additionally, she highlighted the need to approach matters concerning women’s dignity, respect, and veiling with similar sensitivity.
In a series of four posts on the social media platform ‘X’, Mayawati suggested that issues such as school uniforms, veils, and hijabs should be resolved locally through mutual understanding between school management and administrative authorities, rather than escalating them into legal disputes. The BSP leader, identifying her party as one rooted in the principles of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, affirmed the need to respect all religions and their beliefs.
She noted that Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of a secular constitution guarantees equal rights for all, ensuring a cohesive and empowered India. This constitution upholds the right to live peacefully and happily based on various religious texts and customs, which should be respected rather than interfered with.
Mayawati further stated that issues concerning women’s dignity and self-respect should be viewed with the same sensitivity. Regarding the matter of uniforms, veils, and hijabs in schools, she reiterated that these should not be made into legal controversies but should be resolved amicably at the local level to prevent narrow political agendas from surfacing.
She affirmed that the BSP is an Ambedkarite party committed to the respect and protection of all communities and their beliefs. Mayawati urged everyone to refrain from commenting on sensitive religious matters for the greater good of the nation.
She also called for the authorities to find a peaceful and appropriate resolution to the ongoing dispute regarding the installation of a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Badaun district, Uttar Pradesh.
