Youndé, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic attack by Boko Haram militants in Cameroon’s Far North region has left at least 13 civilians dead and one person injured. The incident occurred late Thursday night, between 1 AM and 2 AM, in the Madagoua area of the Logone-et-Chari division, while residents were asleep in their homes.
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the attackers stormed the area and killed the 13 civilians on the spot. The lone survivor was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Local authorities suspect that this assault may have been retaliatory. Just months prior, security forces had intercepted a significant cache of ammunition intended for Boko Haram operatives.
Earlier in August, suspected Boko Haram militants attacked the village of Kongleiri in the same region, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals and injuring one other. This earlier attack occurred around 11 PM on August 7, with armed assailants exploiting the cover of darkness to infiltrate the village before fleeing after the incident.
In that attack, six people died immediately, while three others were critically injured. Two of the injured later succumbed to their wounds in the hospital. However, officials have yet to confirm the full circumstances surrounding that incident.
On the same night as the August attack, reports emerged of suspected Boko Haram militants operating in the town of Tourou, near the Nigerian border. Local sources indicated that the assailants looted stores, stole livestock, and damaged a market on the outskirts of the town. Fortunately, there were no reports of fatalities from this incident.
Boko Haram has been active in Cameroon’s Far North region since 2014, causing extensive loss of life and property throughout the area.
