Manuscripts Are the Soul of India, CM Yogi Urges Preservation Efforts

Lucknow, May 18: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the significance of manuscripts in India’s cultural and intellectual heritage in a letter addressed to the state’s residents. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s view of manuscripts as a chapter of India’s soul.

In his message, CM Yogi posed a thought-provoking question: “What is the soul of India?” He suggested that many might respond with references to ancient texts like the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and figures such as Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Mahatma Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Nanak, and Sant Kabir. He explained that India’s enduring identity has been preserved through oral traditions and manuscripts, which have evolved into texts accessible in homes today. This preservation is why Prime Minister Modi regards manuscripts as integral to India’s essence.

He stated that the true strength of India lies in the knowledge safeguarded in manuscripts for centuries. The continuity of India’s cultural and intellectual heritage is reflected in the vast wealth of manuscripts. These texts encompass knowledge in various fields, including science, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, literature, art, architecture, philosophy, music, and spirituality. Uttar Pradesh is a land of cultural renaissance, evident in landmarks like the grand temple of Lord Rama in Ayodhya and the eternal city of Kashi.

CM Yogi noted that the benefits of accumulated knowledge are accessible today because these manuscripts have awakened intellectual consciousness for thousands of years. Currently, these manuscripts are housed in various museums, libraries, and private collections.

He also mentioned the Indian government’s historic initiative, the ‘Gyaan Bharatam Mission,’ aimed at digitizing ancient manuscripts. This initiative will establish a National Digital Repository, allowing students and researchers worldwide to connect with India’s knowledge traditions. Preserving manuscripts is not just about safeguarding heritage; it is about securing invaluable keys to knowledge for future generations. He urged residents to participate in manuscript preservation efforts.

So far, approximately 700,000 manuscripts have been identified. If anyone possesses ancient manuscripts, handwritten texts, or palm leaves, they are encouraged to upload this information on the ‘Gyaan Bharatam Mobile App’ or portal to ensure their preservation.

CM Yogi further encouraged donations of such manuscripts to the Uttar Pradesh State Archives. He described this mission as vital to our civilizational roots, linking the country’s past knowledge with present innovations, steering towards Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047.
