
Imphal, May 1: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh emphasized the global recognition of Manipur for its rich arts, culture, traditions, and sports heritage during a cultural event on Friday.
The Chief Minister attended the 54th foundation day celebration of the Panthoibi Theatre Temple at Shree Shree Nityananda Mandap in Yumnam Leikai, Imphal West district. He noted that the state’s vibrant cultural and sporting legacy is well-known worldwide.
Khemchand urged the community to further promote and develop Manipur’s culture and sports to reap their extensive and multifaceted benefits.
He praised the Panthoibi Theatre Temple for maintaining its focus on cultural themes while also organizing a workshop on Manipuri Polo (Sagol Kangjei). He expressed enthusiasm about the institution’s efforts to train young members of society in Sagol Kangjei through such initiatives.
Art and Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh congratulated all award winners present at the event, who have brought recognition and pride to the state. The Chief Minister also distributed certificates to 31 youths who participated in the workshop.
In a post on the social media platform X, Khemchand stated that the Panthoibi Theatre Temple has been nurturing talent since its inception. It has carved a unique identity in the fields of theater and traditional dance, earning immense respect in Manipur. The government is fully committed to maintaining and preserving its reputation.
The Friday event included a welcome ceremony for award recipients and the conclusion of a 15-day workshop titled “Strengthening Culture and Values in Education through Sports, especially Manipuri Sagol Kangjei (Polo).”
The Chief Minister honored several theater and cultural personalities, including Akham Neeladhaja Khuman (2024 Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee in theater), Sarungbam Biren (2024 MSKA awardee in theater), Khwairakpam Vishwamitra Singh (2024 MSKA awardee in theater), and Heisnam Sabitri (2026 Bahurupi Ranga Gourav, Rangayan Mysore, Karnataka government).
Other honorees included Sanglakpam Khogendro Sharma (2023 MSKA awardee in Rasadhari), Rajkumar Khogendra Singh (2024 MSKA awardee in dance), and Yumnam Mangai Singh (2024 Monoharsai Music Bhushan awardee from the Manipuri Literary Council). The Minglen Khonga Award 2026 was presented to Laimayum Minakumari Devi.
