Imphal, June 15: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted the state government’s efforts to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and promote organic farming across the state.
On Monday, during a fertilizer distribution camp organized by the Directorate of Agriculture in Sanjenthong, Imphal, the Chief Minister flagged off fertilizer distribution trucks and launched the organic fertilizer brand ‘Urja.’
Singh stated that approximately 4,000 hectares of land in Manipur have already been converted to organic farming. The government aims to initiate organic farming on an additional 4,000 hectares in the coming years.
As part of the initiative to promote sustainable agricultural practices, ‘Urja’ will be available to farmers at a subsidized rate of ₹250 per bag, compared to the market price of ₹480.
The Chief Minister also inspected an organic fertilizer shop established near the event venue. He mentioned that the government has implemented several measures to ensure timely availability of fertilizers for farmers across the state. Singh reported that nearly 1.8 lakh bags of urea had been distributed by September last year, although there were complaints of shortages from some areas.
To address these concerns, fertilizer distribution is now based on Aadhaar cards, farmer cards, and location-specific requirements to ensure fair, transparent, and need-based allocation.
Currently, around 2 lakh bags of urea are available in stock, and Singh emphasized that there is no fertilizer shortage in the state at present. He stated that distribution will occur only based on necessity and after proper document verification.
The Chief Minister further noted that agriculture department officials will closely monitor fertilizer distribution in all districts to prevent irregularities and ensure timely availability for farmers.
He urged farmers to report any complaints regarding fertilizer availability to the Directorate of Agriculture for prompt resolution.
The event was attended by Agriculture Commissioner Thaituilung Panmei, officials from the agriculture department, public representatives, farmers, and other stakeholders.
