Kolkata, July 22: Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, has launched a strong attack on the central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding recent events in Delhi and Kolkata. This criticism comes in light of student protests in Delhi and the TMC’s ‘Martyrs’ Day’ event in Kolkata.
In a post on the social media platform X, Banerjee expressed her support for the opposition’s movement and condemned the actions taken during both incidents. She stated that the alleged police actions against youth in Delhi are unacceptable.
Banerjee criticized the central government, asserting that such treatment of young people is not in line with democratic values. The All India Trinamool Congress fully supports the opposition’s protest held near Akbar Road and stands firmly with the opposition on this issue.
She also referenced the disturbances that occurred during the ‘Martyrs’ Day’ event in Kolkata on Monday night. Banerjee accused certain individuals of attempting to disrupt the preparations for the event. According to her, people on motorcycles damaged signage related to the event, vandalized the stage, and cut microphone wires to disrupt the sound system.
Furthermore, Banerjee claimed that several young party workers were threatened during this time, with some sustaining injuries. She held individuals associated with the BJP responsible, alleging that the attempts to disrupt the event were premeditated.
Despite these allegations, Banerjee asserted that the ‘Martyrs’ Day’ event in Kolkata was a success, receiving widespread support from people across the state and party workers. She emphasized that the significant turnout, despite numerous obstacles, demonstrated that the public stands in solidarity with democratic values and the voice of the opposition.
In her message, Banerjee vowed that her party would continue to fight against the BJP’s alleged oppressive and authoritarian behavior. She stated that this struggle would not be confined to West Bengal but would extend across the country to protect democratic rights and constitutional values.
