Bhopal, July 22: In response to the arrest of Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi during protests in the capital, Congress leaders in Bhopal have voiced their dissent. State Congress President Jitu Patwari was taken into custody by the police, while Congress legislators initiated a sit-in outside the Chief Minister‘s office within the assembly premises. Their protest is expected to continue late into the night.
The Congress party, led by Patwari, surrounded the Raj Bhavan to express their opposition to Gandhi’s arrest, which occurred near the Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi. When police attempted to detain Patwari and other leaders, a standoff ensued between Congress workers and law enforcement, ultimately resulting in the arrest of several Congress leaders.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Umang Singhar and other Congress legislators began their sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s office in the assembly. Singhar condemned the brutal treatment of protesting students in Delhi and labeled the arrest of senior Congress leaders, including Gandhi, as a disgraceful act of the BJP government.
“We are fighting for the respect and justice of students, from Delhi to the Madhya Pradesh assembly,” he stated.
Singhar emphasized that the voice of truth cannot be silenced or arrested. “We will not back down in this battle for democracy,” he added. He accused BJP minister Kailash Vijayvargiya of dismissing student issues by referring to them as “cockroaches” during assembly discussions. Following this, Vijayvargiya allegedly threatened the Congress legislators who were protesting outside the Chief Minister’s office. The minister must apologize to the students, Singhar insisted.
