Kabul, July 21: India has dispatched relief supplies to assist those affected by severe flooding in the Nuristan province of Afghanistan. The aid, sent on Tuesday, includes food items and tents for families. This material has been handed over to Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Following the devastating floods in Nuristan, India has sent relief supplies, including food and tents for families, to the National Disaster Management Authority of Afghanistan to support those in need. During this challenging time, India stands with the people of Afghanistan.”
Local media reports indicate that the flooding in the city of Parun has resulted in at least 20 fatalities, with over 80 individuals injured.
According to Afghanistan’s Khaama Press, citing a statement from the Taliban administration, more than 100 people remain missing following the floods in Parun and surrounding areas. The Taliban-run National Disaster Management Authority reported that the swift floods have impacted Parun and several other regions in Nuristan, causing significant damage to life and property.
Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hamd, head of the authority’s information and publication department, stated that expert teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to assess the situation, search for missing persons, and evaluate the damage.
The floods have damaged or completely swept away numerous homes, agricultural land, and shops, leading to substantial economic losses for the residents. Hamd noted that rescue and relief operations are ongoing, and the numbers of deceased and injured may change as the situation develops.
With over 100 individuals still unaccounted for, authorities fear that the death toll may rise as rescue teams continue their search efforts. Teams are actively looking for those who may have been swept away by the strong currents of the flood.
The flooding occurred after heavy rainfall in several parts of Nuristan. The mountainous terrain and limited road access have posed significant challenges to relief and rescue operations. Afghanistan is among the countries highly susceptible to weather-related natural disasters, frequently experiencing landslides, droughts, and floods.
