Thiruvananthapuram, February 16: Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has made sharp comments regarding Brahminism, Thakurism, and Hindutva, igniting a heated debate in political circles.
In a recent conversation, Aiyar stated, “Can I connect with them? I was born into a Brahmin family. No one asked me to become a Brahmin, but I am one by birth. I do not wear a sacred thread. After reaching adulthood, I have never performed Sandhya Vandana. Most of my childhood vacations were spent at the Shivanand Ashram, which made me a critic of Hindu practices, not Hindu philosophy.”
He clarified his strong opposition to Hindutva, saying, “I view Hindutva as a distortion of Hinduism and an abuse of a great religion. Accusing me of being a Brahmin is akin to accusing Pinarayi Vijayan of being linked to the BJP.”
Aiyar expressed agreement with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement, remarking, “This is the only thing I completely agree with. I live in Delhi, and it’s surprising that my lungs are still functioning. He is right on this issue, but that is the only thing he has said correctly.”
With a hint of sarcasm, he added, “If you want to live in UP, you have to chant ‘Yogi-Yogi.’” Aiyar clarified that he was referring to the pollution in Delhi, not the political climate. “I’m talking about the weather, not politics,” he emphasized.
On the topic of Thakurism, Aiyar remarked, “I don’t know what they mean by Thakurism. If they are referring to feudalism and landlord powers, then I completely agree with them. It could point to the feudal system in Bihar. If my interpretation is correct, I am ready to say, ‘Down with Brahminism and down with Thakurism.’”
