Mumbai, August 19: India showcased an outstanding performance, defeating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test match. Chasing a target of 372 runs at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 206 runs in their second innings. Manav Suthar’s spinning magic was on full display as he claimed a remarkable total of 10 wickets in the match.
In the first innings, Suthar took 4 wickets, while in the second innings, he dismissed 6 Sri Lankan batsmen. This achievement came in just his second Test match, placing him among an elite group of bowlers. He is now tied for second place on the list of Indian bowlers who have taken 10 wickets in a single match with the fewest Test appearances. Before him, only Axar Patel and Laxman Shivaramakrishnan had achieved this feat in their second Test matches, while Narendra Hirwani famously took 16 wickets on his Test debut.
Suthar is now the sixth Indian bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test match against Sri Lanka. This special accomplishment has only been achieved previously by legends like Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Maninder Singh, Venkatesh Prasad, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Notably, Kumble and Harbhajan have both taken 10 wickets in a Test against Sri Lanka on two occasions.
Additionally, Suthar becomes the seventh Indian spin bowler to take 10 wickets on foreign soil in Test cricket. Remarkably, he is the first Indian player to achieve this milestone before the age of 28, accomplishing it at just 24 years and 16 days old.
Sri Lanka’s batting performance in the second innings was disappointing. The only notable contributions came from Sonal Dinuja, who scored 84 runs, and Dhananjay De Silva, who added 59 runs. In a dismal display, four Sri Lankan batsmen returned to the pavilion without scoring. Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a magnificent 167 runs in the first innings, was named ‘Player of the Match’.
