Asian Games 2026 Medalists to Gain Direct Entry into 2027 World Boxing Championship

New Delhi, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Medalists from the upcoming Asian Games 2026 will be granted a significant opportunity to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Boxers who win medals will receive direct entry into the World Boxing Championship set to take place in Kazakhstan in 2027, which serves as the first qualifying event for the Olympics.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has unveiled a comprehensive selection policy aimed at maximizing the number of boxers qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This policy outlines a four-step qualification system developed by “World Boxing” and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

According to the rules established by “World Boxing,” the 2027 World Boxing Championship will be the first qualifying event, followed by the Asian qualifiers in China and two additional world qualifying tournaments in 2028.

Building on the selection guidelines released on December 8, 2025, the BFI has issued updated selection rules for 2027-28. These details are intended to maintain fairness and transparency throughout the selection process.

In a circular issued by the BFI, it was stated, “Asian Games 2026 medalists will be selected as the main entries in their respective weight categories. Gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championship will serve as reserve entries in those categories.”

For weight classes in which India does not secure a medal at the Asian Games 2026, gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championship will be chosen as the main entries, particularly in categories not included in the Asian Games.

Boxers who reach the quota bout round yet fail to secure a spot in the World Championship will receive direct entry into the Asian qualifiers. After participating in the national coaching camp as per the established procedures, remaining slots will be filled through ranking selection trials among elite national campers.

A similar selection process will be applied for the two world qualifying tournaments scheduled in Italy and Hungary in 2028.

The national coaching camp will commence with medalists from the 10th Elite National Championship, Asian Games medalists, and wildcard selections made by the BFI selection committee. For non-Olympic weight categories, gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championship will be main entries in the 2027 World Championship, while silver medalists will act as reserve athletes.
