Colombo, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced its 15-member women’s team for the 2026 Asian Games, with Chamari Athapaththu appointed as captain. The announcement was made on Wednesday in Colombo.
The Sri Lankan team recently reached the finals of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026, where they faced a 72-run defeat against India. The squad selected for the Asian Games features a mix of experienced and emerging players. Notably, several athletes from the Asia Cup roster, including Vishmi Gunaratne and Neelakshika Silva, have not been included in the Asian Games team. Additionally, Chetana Vimukthi, who made a comeback during the Asia Cup, has also been left out.
The selectors have brought in two promising young talents. Chamudi Prabodha, who impressed during the Asia Cup, has secured a spot, along with 19-year-old Rashmika Sewandi, who last played a T20 international match against Pakistan in August.
The team comprises seasoned players such as Imesha Dulani, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Hasini Pereira, and wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani. As they prepare for their opening match against Malaysia, Sri Lanka aims to build on their strong performance from the Asia Cup in this continental competition. The team’s success will heavily depend on the leadership of captain Athapaththu.
