Jhunjhunu dog shooting

Jhunjhunu, 23 August (Kiran News). In Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, a man who recently shot and killed 25 dogs while running around with a gun was welcomed with celebration after being granted bail. Villagers played DJ music, garlanded him, and took him on a rally throughout the village in a pickup vehicle. During the rally, villagers stopped a bus passing through the bus stand and distributed sweets to the passengers. As he was paraded through the village, the man joined his hands in gratitude, acknowledging the grand welcome.

After videos of the welcome surfaced, animal lovers strongly criticised the act on social media, calling it a glorification of crime. One user commented, “Today a dog killer is a celebrity, will a human killer be honoured like this tomorrow?” Another said, “This is a dangerous mindset for society; making criminals into heroes sends the wrong message.”

On 2 August in Kumawas village, Shyochand Bawaria (50), son of Surjaram Bawaria, shot and killed 25 dogs. He searched for and shot the dogs, leaving their bloodied bodies across the village. A video of the incident surfaced on 4 August. Former sarpanch Saroj Jhanjhariya filed a complaint with the SP. Police arrested Shyochand on 18 August. He was granted bail on 22 August and filmed a video as he left the police station. Upon reaching his village, he was again welcomed.

Animal welfare organisations working in Jhunjhunu and surrounding areas also strongly condemned the celebration. They pointed out that while the government spends crores on animal protection, such behaviour by villagers is highly condemnable. They added that killing animals is a serious crime under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and Section 429 of the IPC, which carries provisions for punishment and fines. Honouring the accused is a mockery of both law and justice.

Conflicting Statements from the Village

Two sides have emerged over the incident in Kumawas village. According to Shyochand Bawaria and some villagers, the dogs were attacking their goats, cattle, elderly people, and children, which made Shyochand kill the dogs in anger. However, former sarpanch Saroj claimed these allegations were false, saying the dogs had neither harmed anyone nor killed any goats. She accused Shyochand and his associates of making false claims about dead goats to seek compensation, revealing their wrongful intentions.
