Kolkata, May 3: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee has instructed party counting agents to immediately request a recount in booths where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading by a margin of 500 to 700 votes.
During a virtual meeting with party leaders and counting agents from all 294 assembly constituencies, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of coordination and vigilance. She advised agents to stay near counting centers overnight to ensure timely arrival on Monday.
The meeting lasted for one and a half hours, during which Banerjee highlighted the need for early arrival at counting centers and collective efforts among party workers. She also provided crucial information regarding key points to keep in mind during the counting process.
According to TMC sources, Banerjee stressed the need for strict monitoring during the counting. She stated that a recount should be demanded in booths where the BJP is leading by margins ranging from 500 to 1,000 votes.
The TMC leader expressed confidence that the party would win over 200 seats but cautioned that vigilance must not be relaxed during the counting process. She instructed that no party agent should leave the counting center until she addresses the media on May 4.
Banerjee suggested that candidates, their agents, and counting agents should reach rural or remote counting centers by Sunday to avoid delays. Arrangements for accommodation in nearby hotels or lodges should be made. She advised agents to prepare early and arrive at the centers by 6 AM, well before the counting begins at 8 AM, ensuring an organized approach. Agents were also encouraged to carry notebooks and pens to document proceedings as counting progresses.
Sources indicate that several TMC candidates from West Medinipur and Bankura have already arranged to stay near counting centers on Sunday night. TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who attended the meeting, alleged that exit polls showing the BJP in the lead aim to manipulate the stock market. He claimed similar trends were observed during the 2021 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Criticizing the BJP, he asserted that the party does not expect to form a government in West Bengal. Abhishek Banerjee further accused the BJP of resorting to financial manipulation through misleading surveys. He predicted that the TMC is likely to win more seats than the 215 it secured in 2021.
Party sources also revealed that Abhishek Banerjee criticized the Election Commission, alleging that TMC workers faced difficulties from central forces at the local level. Despite these challenges, he asserted that the BJP would not achieve victory. He issued a stern warning that the party would take legal action against observers appointed by the Election Commission accused of unconstitutional conduct.
