Mamata Banerjee to Meet TMC Legislators to Strategize Opposition Tactics

Kolkata, May 19: Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, has called a meeting with 80 newly elected party legislators. The meeting aims to discuss and adopt strategies for functioning as the main opposition party.

TMC General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee will also attend the meeting.

A party member, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that a key agenda item is how to address the challenges faced by the political administration of various civic bodies still under TMC control, particularly in light of bureaucratic indifference amid changing political circumstances.

This meeting comes in the wake of ongoing developments involving Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials. The current mayor is Firhad Hakim, a four-time TMC member and former cabinet member under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. KMC officials have issued notices under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act 1980, allegedly allowing owners of illegal constructions to present their cases before civic authorities.

Notices have been issued for 17 properties owned by Abhishek Banerjee within KMC jurisdiction, with copies of the notices affixed to the walls of these properties.

Interestingly, these notices were issued after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari hinted at investigating properties linked to a corporate entity reportedly owned by Abhishek Banerjee during a speech in Falta, South 24 Parganas district last week. However, the Chief Minister refrained from naming Banerjee directly, referring to him as ‘Mr. Nephew’ instead. The official also mentioned that he brought a list of 24 properties owned by ‘Mr. Nephew’ to the meeting.

On Monday, the Chief Minister reiterated that the new cabinet is determined to take strict legal action against anyone involved in corruption and the misappropriation of public funds during the previous TMC government.

Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the formation of two separate inquiry commissions, both to be headed by retired judges of the Calcutta High Court, to investigate institutional corruption and crimes against women.

Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, the Chief Minister stated, “These two inquiry commissions will begin their work in June. Justice Biswajit Basu (retired) will lead the committee investigating ‘institutional corruption,’ while Justice Samapti Chattopadhyay will head the committee looking into ‘crimes against women.'”
