Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Resign After Election Loss, Aims to Strengthen India Alliance

Kolkata, May 6: Following a significant defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee emphasized the need to strengthen the ‘India’ alliance to organize a movement against the BJP and NDA government at the national level. She made it clear that she would not resign from her position.

Banerjee stated that the recent loss should not be viewed as a true defeat, as the results do not reflect the genuine mandate of the people.

“Why should I resign now? We have not truly lost. These results are a result of widespread irregularities and vote theft. Therefore, the question of resignation does not arise,” she asserted.

During a press conference, Banerjee was accompanied by her nephew and Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, along with several cabinet members, as they addressed the media.

She mentioned receiving supportive calls from several prominent leaders of the ‘India’ alliance after the results were announced. According to her, leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, and Hemant Soren reached out to express their support.

Banerjee added, “In the coming days, the ‘India’ alliance will grow stronger. Akhilesh wanted to meet, and I have asked him to come on Wednesday. All leaders will meet one by one, and we will strengthen the opposition coalition.”

She also pointed out that the real battle for Trinamool Congress was not against the BJP but rather against the Election Commission.

She alleged, “Our real fight was not with the BJP. This time, the Election Commission was the main villain and created a dark history. First, the right to vote was taken away from people through the SIR. Then, before the elections, our leaders were raided, and officials were changed. There was collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission. The Prime Minister and Home Minister were directly involved in this conspiracy.”

Banerjee further claimed that she faced mistreatment and was pushed when she arrived at the counting center as a candidate on Monday.
