Guwahati, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Congress leader Aminul Islam has raised concerns regarding the results of the BRICS summit hosted by India. Speaking on Sunday, he questioned whether significant discussions took place about key issues affecting India’s strategic interests. He specifically mentioned India-China relations, the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, and developments related to the Strait of Hormuz, urging the central government to clarify its stance.
During a press interaction, Islam emphasized the need for the government to explain whether the BRICS summit yielded concrete outcomes related to India’s national and strategic interests. He expressed skepticism about the current state of India-China relations and whether meaningful discussions occurred regarding the Galwan Valley conflict.
“Has there been any improvement in India-China relations? Was there any discussion on the Galwan situation or the significant drop in the Brahmaputra River’s water levels since 2022?” he asked.
Islam linked the declining water levels of the Brahmaputra River to broader strategic challenges posed by China. He questioned whether the summit adequately addressed these critical issues.
He further noted that discussions at the BRICS summit should not be limited to broad declarations but should also focus on matters directly impacting India’s security, economy, and strategic interests.
Referencing Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian‘s participation in the summit, Islam also questioned whether India engaged in substantial discussions with Tehran regarding developments in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is vital for global energy supplies and maritime trade, and events in this region can significantly affect international commerce and energy distribution.
Islam criticized the central government’s foreign policy, claiming that India’s international relations have weakened in recent years. “Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is merely posing for photographs. Currently, India’s international relations are fundamentally poor, with foreign policy continuously deteriorating,” he stated.
He challenged whether the BRICS summit would ultimately bring any tangible benefits to India and called for greater clarity from the central government regarding the summit’s results. “The question remains whether the BRICS summit has brought anything positive for India. This needs to be clarified first,” he concluded.
Islam’s comments follow the BRICS summit, where leaders from the expanded group discussed global economic and strategic issues amid complex geopolitical circumstances. His remarks center on whether substantial progress was made on issues tied to India’s national interests during the extensive diplomatic discussions at the summit.
