Imphal, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Manipur stated on Sunday that restoring peace and normalcy is among the government’s top responsibilities, especially given the state’s ongoing ethnic crisis. His remarks came during the closing ceremony of the 2026 State-Level Open Chess Championship, where he highlighted the challenges of establishing peace in the current circumstances.
Khemchand compared the task of achieving peace to sewing a needle into a torn fabric, emphasizing that it requires patience, caution, and continuous effort. He called for unity among the 36 communities residing in the state, stressing the importance of mutual trust and collaboration.
The Chief Minister also noted significant progress in restoring road transport links between Imphal and the cities of Guwahati in Assam and Dimapur in Nagaland, which had been disrupted for over three years. He attributed this progress to extensive dialogues with various civil society organizations and stakeholders.
According to Khemchand, the restoration of road transport is not just about improving transportation; it represents a crucial step towards returning peace and normalcy to Manipur. The event also featured cultural performances, and the Chief Minister officially inaugurated the chess tournament.
Notable attendees included Tho. Kanto Singh, vice president of the Service Recreation and Organization of Youths; IMC Mayor L. Lokeshwar Singh; and several officials, players, and spectators. During the event, Laitonjham Ranbir Singh was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Arm Wrestling Federation.
