Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the voter list in West Bengal. The petition names the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) as parties in the case.
There has been intense political debate in West Bengal regarding the SIR exercise. Mamata Banerjee has previously raised several allegations against the process and sent letters to the Chief Election Commissioner. Now, she has taken the matter to the highest court.
In her petition, the Chief Minister has accused the Election Commission of political bias and authoritarian conduct. She stated that the constitutional institution, expected to protect democratic values and impartiality, has reached a concerning level that threatens democratic society.
The petition requests the Supreme Court to intervene directly and issue appropriate directions on the matter.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to meet the Chief Election Commissioner at the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi on Monday. She is also expected to hold discussions with top opposition leaders to build a consensus against the SIR process.
According to party sources, the Chief Minister chose this timing for her visit to the national capital deliberately, as the ongoing budget session ensures that opposition leaders are present there. Although her return date to Kolkata is not yet fixed, insiders suggest she will be back before February 5.
On Saturday, Mamata Banerjee sent a strongly worded letter again to the Chief Election Commissioner, heightening the anticipation around Monday’s meeting.
