New Delhi, June 10: Following the recent assembly election defeat in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is currently on a visit to Delhi. This marks her first trip to the capital since the election results were announced.
During her visit, Mamata Banerjee met with Sonia Gandhi, the president of the Congress Parliamentary Party, at her residence on 10 Janpath. The two leaders engaged in discussions for nearly an hour.
Notably, this is the second meeting between Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi within 24 hours. They first met during the Indi Alliance meeting on Monday, where they shared a warm embrace, indicating a spirit of camaraderie.
Mamata Banerjee’s visit comes at a critical time as the TMC faces significant political challenges. Following the assembly election loss, discontent within the party has been rising. Reports of dissatisfaction among some legislators have emerged, and the announcement by certain MPs to support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has further complicated the leadership’s position.
During her time in Delhi, Mamata Banerjee first met with Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party and former Chief Minister of Delhi. Her subsequent meeting with Sonia Gandhi is seen as a pivotal moment for opposition politics.
Sources indicate that at the recent Indi Alliance meeting, Mamata raised concerns about the Election Commission’s role during the West Bengal elections. She urged opposition parties to remain united, emphasizing the need for solidarity to protect democratic values in the future.
Historically, the relationship between the TMC and Congress has been tumultuous. Mamata Banerjee founded the TMC after breaking away from Congress in 1998. In 2011, both parties collaborated to oust the long-standing Left Front government. However, their relationship soured afterward, leading to many Congress leaders and legislators joining the TMC.
Now, with the TMC’s weakening position in West Bengal, Congress sees an opportunity to reclaim its lost political ground in the state.
