Kochi, June 7: Renowned Malayalam actor and National Award winner Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night at approximately 10:45 PM in a private hospital in Kochi. The 56-year-old actor had been battling a severe liver-related illness and was placed on ventilator support due to his deteriorating condition. Condolences have poured in from various celebrities, including Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and actor-director Mammootty.
Salim Kumar’s death has sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film industry and among his fans. His residence, ‘Laughing Villa’ in North Paravoor, once a symbol of his laughter and vibrant personality, now stands in deep silence.
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan paid tribute on the social media platform X, stating, “Salim Kumar was not just the prince of laughter for me; he was a very close person. He expressed his political views fearlessly and proudly stood with the Congress party. He was a talented artist who could make people laugh and cry with the same face. Malayalam cinema has lost a great artist, and I have lost a brother.”
Malayalam superstar Mammootty also shared an emotional message on X. He wrote, “Salim, who made others laugh while laughing himself, made us think while pondering, and sometimes cried while making others weep, has now left me in tears. Your departure has become an everlasting sorrow.”
Known for his exceptional acting and remarkable comic timing, Salim Kumar worked in around 120 films over a nearly three-decade-long career. He initially gained recognition as a comedy actor but later left a significant mark in serious and emotional roles. He received the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film ‘Adaminte Makan Abu.’
Salim Kumar struggled with severe liver cirrhosis throughout his life. He publicly stated that his illness was not due to alcohol consumption but rather hereditary reasons.
On Sunday morning, his mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at the Paravoor Town Hall. Following this, the body will be taken to his residence, ‘Laughing Villa,’ for the final farewell.
