New Delhi, March 17: The Congress party in Assam has faced a significant setback ahead of the state assembly elections. Pradyut Bordoloi, a Congress MP and a close associate of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, resigned from the Indian National Congress on Tuesday.
In his resignation letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi stated, “It is with great sadness that I resign from all positions, special privileges, and primary membership of the Indian National Congress.” He bid farewell to the party while extending his best wishes.
Bordoloi represents the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency and has won elections in 2019 and 2024 on a Congress ticket. Dibrugarh is a crucial industrial and tea-producing region where the BJP has maintained a strong foothold. Political sources suggest that Bordoloi is likely to join the BJP soon.
He may soon take membership in the BJP and play a significant role in the party’s Assam unit. This resignation is seen as a major blow to Congress in Assam, where the party is already grappling with organizational weaknesses and internal strife.
Bordoloi has been a loyal leader of Congress for many years. He has previously served as the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and played a vital role in the party’s campaign during the 2016 assembly elections.
However, the Congress party has faced continuous defeats in Assam over the past few years, culminating in a mere 29 seats in the 2021 assembly elections, which has led to growing discontent among several leaders. Bordoloi had also expressed disagreements regarding the party’s strategy, organizational structure, and decisions made by the central leadership.
In addition to personal dissatisfaction, the changing political landscape in Assam and the rising strength of the BJP are believed to be contributing factors behind his resignation. The BJP has been in power in Assam since 2016 and won 9 out of 14 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while Congress managed only 3 seats. Thus, Bordoloi’s shift to the BJP could further strengthen the party in Dibrugarh and Upper Assam.
It is noteworthy that voting for Assam’s total of 126 assembly seats will take place in a single phase on April 9, with results expected on May 4.
