Transformation of Northeast India: 12 Peace Agreements and 10,000 Surrendered Militants, Says CM Sarma

Guwahati, June 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Saturday that there has been a significant transformation in the development journey of Northeast India over the past decade. He emphasized that the region has moved away from its identity of militancy and instability, entering a new era of peace, infrastructure development, enhanced connectivity, and economic progress.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister noted that Assam has reaped the greatest benefits from the peaceful environment established in the Northeast, which has accelerated development projects and attracted investments to the state.

He wrote, “In recent years, the narrative of development in the Northeast has shifted from militancy and instability to infrastructure, connectivity, and economic growth. Assam has gained the most from this peaceful atmosphere.”

This post was shared as part of the central government’s campaign, ‘12 Years of Progress in the Northeast,’ highlighting the development achieved under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

According to the data shared under this campaign, 12 major peace agreements have been signed in the Northeast since 2014, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the region and resolving long-standing conflicts.

The campaign also claims that over 10,000 militants have surrendered during this period, reflecting the success of peace initiatives and rehabilitation policies by both central and state governments.

Statistics indicate a 97% reduction in civilian deaths related to militancy since 2015, while militant incidents have decreased by 82% since 2014.

The campaign material describes this transformation in the Northeast as a “journey of peace, progress, and stability.” It also references Prime Minister Modi‘s statement that peace, security, and economic transformation in the Northeast have been among his top priorities.

Over the last decade, the central government has focused on making the Northeast a key engine of India’s development journey. This has involved substantial investments in roads, railways, airports, waterways, digital connectivity, and infrastructure in border areas.

The Assam government has also noted that the improved security environment has led to increased investment in the state, boosted tourism, and accelerated infrastructure projects, providing new direction for social and economic development across the region.
