
Mathura, March 17: In a significant breakthrough for women’s safety, Mathura police have successfully apprehended two suspects involved in a gang rape case. The incident occurred late on Monday night during an encounter between the police and the accused in the Mant area. One suspect was injured by gunfire, while the other was captured after a brief chase.
According to police sources, the arrested individuals have been identified as Rajkumar (24) and Durgesh (20), both residents of Begampur village. They are accused of gang raping a woman near the pontoon bridge over the Yamuna River on March 14. Since the incident, law enforcement has been actively searching for the suspects.
On the night of March 16, around 10:05 PM, a tip-off led the Mant police team to set up a blockade in the Arrua Khadar area. The police attempted to apprehend the suspects near a plot along the unpaved road leading from Radharani Underpass to Dagoli. Realizing they were surrounded, Rajkumar opened fire at the police with the intent to kill.
In response, the police returned fire, injuring Rajkumar in his left leg. Both he and Durgesh were subsequently arrested at the scene. The injured suspect was immediately taken to CHC Mant for medical treatment.
Authorities recovered an illegal firearm (.315 bore), one live cartridge, and two spent cartridges from Rajkumar.
Further investigations revealed that both suspects have a criminal history. Rajkumar has previous charges against him under the POCSO Act and various sections of the BNS at the Mant police station. The police are now gathering information about their accomplices and other criminal activities.
CO Sandeep Singh stated that a case was registered at the Mant police station concerning the incident of sexual assault in the Begampur forests. Following the tip-off, when the police attempted to apprehend the suspects, they were met with gunfire. Rajkumar was shot in the leg and has been sent for treatment, while Durgesh has been taken into custody. The police are proceeding with further legal actions in the case.
