Jaishankar Discusses Ongoing Conflict in West Asia with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar

New Delhi, March 20: Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, on Thursday regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its implications.

Following their discussion, Jaishankar shared insights on the social media platform X, stating, “I had a telephone conversation this evening with Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its various impacts.”

This dialogue took place during a time of escalating tensions in West Asia, ignited by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. These attacks resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military officials. In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile strikes targeting U.S. and Israeli installations, as well as regional capitals and allied forces.

In recent days, Jaishankar has also engaged with counterparts from several countries, including Russia, Iran, France, and Oman, as India maintains continuous contact with regional governments and key partners regarding the situation in West Asia.

Earlier that day, Jaishankar met with UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy to discuss the latest developments related to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. During this meeting, he expressed gratitude to the UAE government for its care of the Indian community.

He later posted on X, “I was pleased to meet with UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy on Thursday afternoon. I thanked the UAE government for its care of the Indian community and discussed the latest developments concerning the conflict in West Asia.”

On March 16, Jaishankar met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Belgium, where they discussed events in West Asia and Ukraine. Jaishankar appreciated von der Leyen’s insights on contemporary global events.

He noted on X, “I was happy to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday afternoon. Her highly successful state visit to India this January marked a significant turning point in our relations. We are moving forward rapidly. I appreciate her views on contemporary global events.”
