New Delhi, July 22: Trade relations between India and Nepal are advancing rapidly. The first shipment of canola seeds has arrived at the customs yard in Biratnagar, Nepal, via the Kolkata Port and the Jogbani Indian Customs Yard in India.
The Indian Embassy in Nepal hailed this achievement as a significant milestone in India-Nepal trade. They announced on the social media platform ‘X’ that on July 20, 2026, the first batch of canola grains reached the customs yard in Biratnagar through the Jogbani Indian Customs Yard. This development follows the signing of a Letter of Exchange in November 2025, amending the Nepal-India Transit Treaty Protocol.
The post further noted that cross-border cargo train services will help reduce logistics costs and enhance trade between India and Nepal.
After the amendment to the Nepal-India Transit Treaty Protocol last year, Nepal was permitted to utilize both bulk and container rail freight services through the Biratnagar Integrated Check Post (ICP). This marks the first time that goods trains have directly arrived at the Biratnagar ICP with Indian assistance.
Umesh Shrestha, the Chief Customs Officer at Biratnagar Customs Office, stated, “A goods train filled with 40 containers of canola grains, used as raw material for Swastik Oil Industries, arrived at the ICP on Monday.”
This shipment was transported by a goods train operated by the Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR). All containers were equipped with an Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS), allowing for monitoring of the cargo throughout the journey.
The Nepalese Consulate in Kolkata previously announced that this goods train departed from Kolkata Port on July 17, carrying 40 high-capacity containers to the customs yard at Biratnagar ICP.
