
Toronto, August 27: Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the investor-friendly policies in India during a high-level business roundtable with CEOs and senior executives of major Canadian companies. She emphasized the favorable policy environment, tax certainty, and ongoing reforms that create opportunities for collaboration across various sectors and regions in India.
This appeal was made during her address at the roundtable in Toronto, where leaders from sectors such as clean technology, essential minerals, rare earths, energy storage, sustainable infrastructure, agriculture, food processing, automotive, textiles, green steel, aerospace, space, cybersecurity, biotechnology, AI, asset management, higher education, and skills development gathered.
Sitharaman met with Jo Taylor, President and CEO of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), praising OTPP’s long-term commitment to India and its partnership with the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF). The discussions focused on enhancing OTPP’s infrastructure investments through partnerships and co-investments in areas like transmission, transport, urban infrastructure, and renewable energy.
The Finance Minister also presented the Gift-IFSC as a platform for global investors, encouraging OTPP to strengthen its engagement with India and explore significant investment opportunities.
Additionally, she met Blake Hutchison, President and CEO of OMERS, acknowledging the organization’s ongoing trust in India. She encouraged OMERS to deepen its long-term engagement by leveraging its investments in infrastructure and real estate.
The discussions centered on opportunities in transportation, transmission, renewable energy, urban infrastructure, logistics, and real estate, emphasizing India’s robust growth, expanding middle class, and infrastructure needs. Sitharaman reiterated the investor-friendly policy environment, tax certainty, and ongoing reforms, urging OMERS to explore new opportunities and partnerships across various sectors in India.
In a meeting with John Graham, President and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), the Minister appreciated their long-term commitment to India, including investments in NIIF Infra Fund II. The conversation primarily focused on enhancing institutional capital opportunities in transmission, renewable energy, roads, ports, urban infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and data centers.
