Nagpur, August 9: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully seized gold worth over 3 crore rupees at Nagpur Railway Station. One passenger has been arrested in connection with this gold smuggling case.
The DRI team in Nagpur received a tip-off indicating that gold smuggled through the India-Bangladesh border was being transported by train. Acting on this information, officials monitored the 12102 Gyaneshwari Express.
Authorities learned that the gold was intended to be delivered to its next destination via a passenger on the same train. Subsequently, the DRI team maintained surveillance at Nagpur Railway Station. Upon the train’s arrival, the suspicious passenger was detained. During the search, gold hidden in his belongings was discovered.
A total of 16 gold bars weighing 2 kilograms and 165 grams were confiscated. The estimated value of the seized gold in the international market is approximately 3 crore 9 lakh rupees. Preliminary investigations revealed that this gold had been smuggled into India via the India-Bangladesh border, with plans to distribute it across other parts of the country by rail.
The DRI has begun interrogating the arrested passenger and is actively searching for other individuals involved in the smuggling network. The process of depositing the confiscated gold into the government treasury has also commenced.
DRI officials stated that they are keeping a close watch on cross-border smuggling activities. Such operations will continue in the future.
