Kabul, August 10: In a significant operation, police in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province seized a large quantity of narcotics and arrested six individuals. Provincial police spokesperson Nizamuddin Omir reported this on Sunday.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the suspects were apprehended on Saturday night while allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs hidden in vehicles. The case has been forwarded to relevant authorities, and initial interrogations of the accused are underway.
Government media outlet Bakhtar News Agency noted that on July 16, Afghan police confiscated 241 kilograms of illegal drugs during two separate operations in the northeastern Badakhshan province, leading to the arrest of nine suspects.
The report indicated that special police forces recovered the narcotics during raids in the Pul-e-Begum and Tashkan areas. The drugs were found in a vehicle and a house.
The statement mentioned that nine individuals were detained during these operations, and investigations against the suspects are ongoing. Authorities reiterated their commitment to combating drug trafficking and related crimes nationwide.
In Nimroz province, anti-drug police commander Mawlavi Esmatullah Ahmad reported that significant quantities of illegal narcotics were seized during several operations in western Afghanistan.
He stated that over the past week, 84 kilograms of opium, 130 kilograms of methamphetamine, and more than 200 kilograms of other illegal substances used in the production of opium and heroin were confiscated.
The official noted that seven individuals were arrested on charges of involvement in drug trafficking in the province.
Similarly, as part of the campaign against illegal drugs, police publicly burned 730 kilograms of opium on July 15 in northern Badakhshan province.
On July 4, Afghan police also seized 60 kilograms of illegal drugs during a special operation in Takhar province, arresting two suspected traffickers.
According to provincial police spokesperson Nizamuddin Omir, the traffickers attempted to transport 52 kilograms of opium and eight kilograms of hashish hidden in secret compartments of a vehicle to an undisclosed location. However, the police recovered the drugs during the raid.
As part of the ongoing campaign against illegal narcotics, Afghan security forces thwarted a major drug trafficking attempt on July 2 in eastern Ghazni province, seizing 215 kilograms of opium.
