Major Drug Bust in Assam: NCB Seizes 524.9 kg of Cannabis, Two Arrested

Guwahati, March 9: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has conducted a significant operation against drug trafficking in Assam. During this operation, officials seized 524.9 kilograms of cannabis, valued at approximately ₹2.6 crore in the international market. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with this case.

According to NCB officials, the operation took place on March 8 based on confidential information. The Guwahati zonal unit, in collaboration with the 155th Battalion of the CRPF, intercepted a Tata Intra V70 truck in the Kharkhati area of Assam. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a specially constructed secret chamber containing a large quantity of cannabis. The traffickers had cleverly concealed the drugs to evade detection by law enforcement agencies.

The initial investigation indicates that this cannabis was sourced from the forest areas of Senapati district in Manipur and was intended for delivery to Birbhum district in West Bengal. Investigative agencies are now working to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to this trafficking network.

This marks the second major operation by the NCB’s Guwahati zonal unit in the past month. Previously, on February 7, the NCB, with assistance from the 147th Battalion of the CRPF, conducted a raid near Silchar, Assam, seizing 11.7 kg of methamphetamine, valued at around ₹9.5 crore in the international illegal market.

In light of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal, the NCB has intensified its efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The agency is conducting special operations to prevent the flow of illegal money and drugs during the election period. The NCB’s Northeastern Region has achieved significant success over the past two months, confiscating drugs worth approximately ₹105 crore in the illegal market.

To date, a total of 21 cases have been registered, leading to the arrest of 40 traffickers. This includes the seizure of 1,036 kg of cannabis, 72.5 kg of methamphetamine, 17 kg of heroin, 6.25 kg of morphine, and 13,816 bottles of CBCS (cough syrup).

NCB officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to uncover the entire drug trafficking network and locate other suspects involved.
