
Mumbai, June 12: A significant success for the customs department occurred at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, authorities arrested a 28-year-old female passenger arriving from Bangkok.
The woman was found in possession of 11.824 kilograms of hydroponic weed (high-quality marijuana), valued at approximately ₹11.82 crore in the international market.
According to Mumbai customs officials, the woman was stopped for inspection after her activities raised suspicion upon disembarking from her flight. A thorough search of her trolley bag revealed 12 vacuum-sealed transparent plastic packets, which were confirmed to contain hydroponic weed.
Officials reported that the total weight of the seized hydroponic marijuana was 11.824 kilograms. Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested woman worked as a relationship manager for a company. The department has filed a case against her under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, leading to her arrest. She was later presented in court and remanded to judicial custody.
Earlier, on May 22, two passengers were arrested at Mumbai Airport. During interrogation, both admitted to swallowing drug-filled capsules. They were subsequently admitted to a nearby government hospital, where 84 capsules were extracted from their bodies, containing 1.40 kilograms of cocaine valued at around ₹7 crore.
Similarly, on May 19, the DRI conducted another successful operation. An African male and female passenger arriving from Addis Ababa were stopped. During questioning, both confessed to swallowing cocaine capsules. Medical examinations at the hospital revealed 63 capsules, containing 850 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately ₹4.25 crore.
