Srinagar, July 23: A significant crackdown is underway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district following the murder of a local police officer. In the last 24 hours, authorities have detained approximately 3,500 Over Ground Workers (OGWs) linked to terrorist activities in the region.
Senior police officials reported that the operation was initiated after the killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi. He was on duty when the attack occurred. The police are intensifying security operations to identify and dismantle the support network for terrorism in the valley. Searches and raids are ongoing in multiple locations.
Additionally, two houses belonging to active militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were demolished in Anantnag on Thursday. This action took place just a day after the tragic incident involving the police officer.
Head Constable Qureshi, who hailed from Beerwah in Budgam district, was serving with the Armed Police’s Third Battalion at the time of his death.
Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack. The Lieutenant Governor stated on social media that those responsible for the police officer’s murder would face justice.
A tribute ceremony was held at the district police lines in Anantnag to honor the fallen officer. Hundreds attended his funeral in his hometown, expressing condolences to the grieving family.
The attack has been claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is designated as a terrorist entity by the United Nations.
Since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, the TRF has emerged, utilizing secular names and symbols to mask its identity while targeting local religious minorities. The group maintains a significant presence on social media, with some of its elements reportedly connected to Pakistan.
