Chandigarh, June 9: The Amritsar rural police, in collaboration with a central agency, successfully arrested two individuals linked to cross-border handlers in a joint operation. Two hand grenades were seized from their possession. This information was shared by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav via the social media platform X.
According to the Punjab DGP, initial investigations revealed that the accused were in contact with handlers based abroad and were acting under their directives. The recovery of the hand grenades indicates a significant conspiracy aimed at disrupting peace and law and order in Punjab.
The DGP stated that an FIR has been registered against the accused at the Garhinda police station under relevant sections of the law. Further investigations are ongoing to identify other associates within the network and trace their connections. The Punjab police remain fully committed to dismantling terrorist networks, eradicating organized crime, and ensuring peace and public safety across the state.
Previously, the Amritsar Commissionerate police had uncovered a cross-border illegal arms smuggling and hawala network, arresting four individuals, including an Afghan national. They seized eight sophisticated pistols and seven live cartridges from their possession.
The Punjab DGP had indicated that preliminary investigations suggested that the accused were allegedly in contact with a smuggler residing abroad, who was secretly supplying shipments of illegal arms. The seized weapons were reportedly intended for distribution to criminal elements. FIRs have been lodged at the Islamabad police station and the Gate Hakima police station in Amritsar against the accused.
On June 3, the Punjab DGP announced a significant success for the Amritsar police commissionerate in their ongoing campaign against drug and illegal arms trafficking. The police dismantled an interstate arms and drug smuggling module operating from across the border, arresting two individuals and seizing 2.225 kilograms of heroin, six advanced pistols, and twelve live cartridges.
